What to Expect

Qinghai Lake, also called Koko Nor, is the largest saltwater lake in China. It lies at around 3,200 meters on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, about 150–170 km from Xining in Qinghai Province.

The lake is surrounded by wide grasslands, rolling hills and small Tibetan and Muslim villages. In summer, the shoreline is decorated with wildflowers and fields of yellow rape flowers, while cyclists and road‑trippers follow the scenic ring road for big‑sky views and open landscapes.

  • Walk along the lakeshore to enjoy open views, fresh plateau air and changing light on the water.
  • Cycle a section of the ring road or join a vehicle‑supported trip to experience the landscape at a slower pace.
  • Visit designated bird‑watching areas in season for chances to see migratory species and wetland wildlife.
  • Stop at local Tibetan villages or small mosques to learn about regional cultures and try simple home‑style meals.
  • Combine Qinghai Lake with nearby attractions around Xining, such as Kumbum (Ta’er) Monastery or Chaka Salt Lake on longer trips.

  • Day 1 – Xining to Qinghai Lake: Drive or join a tour from Xining, stopping at roadside viewpoints and lakeside villages. Walk along the shore, visit viewing platforms and take photos of the wide plateau scenery.
  • Day 2 – Lakeside experience: Enjoy sunrise over the water if the weather is clear, then choose a short cycling section, horseback riding or a boat trip (in season). Return to Xining in the afternoon, optionally stopping at nearby attractions or monasteries along the way.

Travel Tips

  • Qinghai Lake sits at over 3,000 meters. Walk slowly at first, drink plenty of water and avoid heavy exertion on the first day.
  • Temperatures can change quickly; even in summer, pack a warm jacket, windproof layer, hat and gloves for evenings or bad weather.
  • Sunlight is strong at altitude. Use sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect your skin and eyes.
  • Respect local customs when visiting Tibetan or Muslim communities—dress modestly and ask before taking close‑up photos of people.
  • The environment is fragile; stay on marked paths, do not litter and avoid disturbing wildlife or grazing animals.

FAQ

Is Qinghai Lake safe to visit for first‑time plateau travelers?
Yes. Most travelers visit without problems, but you should be aware of the higher altitude. Move slowly and stay hydrated, especially on the first day.

Can you swim in Qinghai Lake?
Swimming is not recommended because of the cold water, variable weather and environmental protection rules in many areas. Enjoy the view from the shore instead.

Will I get altitude sickness at Qinghai Lake?
Many visitors feel only mild symptoms such as shortness of breath when walking uphill, but sensitive travelers may feel headaches or fatigue. If you feel unwell, rest, drink water and inform your guide.

Is it possible to visit Qinghai Lake in winter?
Some sections are accessible, but it can be extremely cold and windy and many local services close for the season. Most leisure trips focus on the warmer months from late spring to early autumn.
