Overview
What to Expect
Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area is one of China’s most spectacular natural attractions, famous for its unique landscape of over 3,000 quartz sandstone pillars that rise dramatically from the surrounding forest. Located in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, this scenic area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and served as the inspiration for the floating mountains in the blockbuster movie “Avatar.”
Spanning over 397 square kilometers, Wulingyuan consists of four main scenic areas: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve, and Yangjiajie Scenic Area. The quartz sandstone pillars, some of which reach heights of over 200 meters, were formed over 380 million years through erosion, weathering, and tectonic activity.
One of the most iconic features of Wulingyuan is the “Hallelujah Mountains” (Yuanjiajie Scenic Area), which gained international fame after being featured in “Avatar.” These towering pillars, often surrounded by mist and clouds, create a surreal, otherworldly landscape that seems to defy gravity.
